The letter U is decorated with a wolf, which in Irish can be translated to "mac tíre" ("mack cheerah"), meaning "son of the land". Other Irish words for wolf are "madra allta" meaning wild dog, or faolchú  ("fail-kooh"). Wild wolves roamed Ireland in previous centuries, but were hunted to extinction, with the last recorded sighting in 1786. Wolves feature greatly in Irish myths and folklore. For example, Cormac mac Airt, a High King of Ireland, was said to have been raised by wolves.
