There are no wild bears in Ireland today, but it is thought that they were common in Ireland in past ages, and died out in the 1st millennium BC. Bears feature greatly in Irish myths and legends. In one story Fionn mac Cumhaill was aided by a bear in the Battle of Ventry. In another story, the father (Lir) of the children turned into swans by a jealous stepmother, transforms into a bear to look for his children.
